GranuFlo Dry Acid Concentrate, a product used in dialysis treatment, has been associated with increased risks of cardiac arrest and death when doctors fail to administer the correct dose. The company that manufactures GranuFlo, Fresenius Medical Care, became aware of the risk after 941 people died at Fresenius clinics in 2010. The company did not inform the FDA about the side effect until an internal memo was leaked by an anonymous source. A growing number of lawsuits are now being filed against Fresenius over injuries linked to GranuFlo.

What’s the problem?
GranuFlo is a product that is added to a patient’s blood during dialysis treatment. It balances the pH of the blood with several chemicals, including acetic acid and acetate. When these chemicals are metabolized, they can elevate bicarbonate levels and cause metabolic alkalosis. This risk factor is associated with sudden cardiac arrest, heart attack, and death.
GranuFlo and Failure to Warn
GranuFlo is manufactured by Fresenius Medical Care, the largest provider of dialysis clinics and products in the world. The company operates more than 1,800 dialysis treatment clinics in the United States and serves hundreds of thousands of Americans.
In November 2011, Fresenius researchers sent an internal memo to doctors at their clinics regarding an unusual increase in the number of deaths at their clinics — 941 people died at Fresenius clinics in 2010, and improper dosing of GranuFlo (especially to patients with high bicarbonate levels before dialysis) was identified as a primary cause of death.
Despite the serious risk, the memo was not sent to the FDA, doctors at other clinics, or the public. The government only became aware of the risk when an anonymous source leaked the memo in March 2012. Shortly afterward, the FDA issued a Class 1 recall of GranuFlo. Many lawsuits are now being filed by people who were injured.
